DESCRIPTION

System Gate is the flagship game of Speedrobo Games, which I got to work on after working with the company for a little while. It is the game I have definitely done the most work on for this company, and there is a lot to show!

Not only did I help design the cards released during 2024, but I also got a chance to help test them as well! I created in-game assets, tested for user accessibility, and even got to help recreate ALL of the games card frames!

UI/UX and Graphic Design

What I did

Arguably my biggest contribution to this game was the creation of its card frames. There were frames that were originally being used before I was brought on board, but the lead designer told me it was time for a change! Obviously I used the old ones as reference, but the new frames had to be unique, visually distinctive, and also give a better feel as to what kind of playstyle each different planet (faction) had.

I also completely redid their backend card production, changing it all into new software, and reducing the time it takes to create a single card by 80%! This made the production of assets infinitely easier on the rest of the team.

My roles as a UI/UX and Graphic Designer included:

  • Concept and design assets and frames for a science fiction card game

  • Conduct user testing to ensure that each element on each asset is readable and understandable

  • Create new pipelines for production that increases productivity by up to 80%

Below you can see the assets I made while on this assignment!

Card Creation and product design

What I did

After the frames were made and ready, I was responsible for making every card after! I was handed a massive sheet full of data and I was required to put my new pipeline to the test. I entered all of the data on those sheets onto cards!

I did this for multiple sets, and gained experience in data entry and mass asset creation!

Here you can see the products once I got it all ready for print! They're all sealed up in boxes that I also had a hand in designing!

Game Design and Playtesting

What I did

As one of the game designers, I participated in discussions and meetings to plan, concept, and design each individual card. Then, I tested them in hours long rigorous playtesting sessions.

After a potentially unintended interaction was discovered through playtesting, I took notes and considered possible solutions, and then repeated the process until we found a version of the card that works! You can see an excerpt from one of these sessions to the right!

My jobs as a game designer and playtester were:

  • Discuss abilities and stats for all the cards.

  • Play countless games and take notes on their results.

  • Conceptualize potential solutions for problems discovered in the game.
