ROLES

Co-Producer / Game Design / Graphic Design / UI/UX Design / Voice Acting

DESCRIPTION

Mismatched Mayhem was my first game that I got to work on with a team of designers, taking on the role of Co-Producer alongside the team lead, Jessica Barthelt. She and I planned meetings for the various disciplines in the team, held a weekly meeting to go over our progress, and organized our priorities to prepare the game for presentation at FUSE 2022!

You can see Jessica's site here! She was my main partner in bringing this game to life!

For my other contributions, I led the Game Design, and worked on the Graphic Design, UI/UX, and Voice Acted the announcer for the game!

Game Design

What I did

As the lead Game Designer, I proposed the initial concept of the game. "What if we made a fighting game where the fighters were different every game?" From there, we built an arcade experience where the goal was to build a monster from random parts and watch them battle to the death. Who built the stronger monster? Only time will tell!

I also participated in weekly meetings with not only the team lead, but also with our professor who would present us with problems we needed to fix, but would leave the solutions up to us! And that meant I needed to lead group discussions on what solutions were possible, but also the most effective.

My jobs in this position were:

  • Lead meetings to discuss mechanics and solutions to discovered problems.

  • Participate in discussions exploring new additions to gameplay.

  • Playtest builds to find new problems and think of potential solutions.

  • Explore solutions and fit them to work within scope.

Here you can see the game being played in the signature arcade machine we designed it for! You can see a whole match, as well as the setup we prepared it in.

UI/UX and Graphic Design

What I did

In addition to my work on the game design and production, I was a part of the UI/UX team! This was my first job on this discipline, so I learned from my fellow students while I worked to concept menus in the game, and create in-game assets!

Not only that, but during my playtest sessions for my design role, I was responsible for taking notes on how the testers engaged with our UI, and presented those notes to our UI team!

My roles in this aspect were:

  • Assist in creating visually unique and engaging assets for the games various menus and screens.

  • Implement said assets into the game using Unity.

  • Conduct user research to ensure players never feel confused.

  • Elaborate on already existing assets to solve potential communication issues.

You can see my UI concepts and in-game assets below!

Check out our booth at FUSE 2022! This used an older build, before we figured out how to animated the cool fire background. We wanted a visually exciting first sight when the user walks up to the arcade machine, and you could watch people play through the screens on the sides!

Voice Acting

What I did

We were making a game that wanted to call back to the 80s arcade games, so we obviously needed a toxic wrestler announcer! Thats where I came in. I was solely responsible for voicing our announcer, and even editing the clips to sound more epic!
